Digital Nomad Visa: Should I Apply in Spain or at My Home Consulate?

One of the most common questions we hear from clients pursuing Spain's Digital Nomad Visa is whether it's better to apply from their home consulate or to come to Spain and apply from within the country. The short answer? It depends on your situation. But if you have the flexibility to come to Spain, that's almost always what we recommend — and here's why.

1. You get a longer residency permit
When you apply from within Spain, your residency permit is valid for three years. Apply from your home consulate, and you're looking at just one year. That's a significant difference, especially if you're planning to plant real roots here.

2. The application process is entirely online
Applying from within Spain means no appointments, no printing stacks of documents, and no coordinating with a consulate's schedule. The entire process is done online, and you can get started as soon as you arrive in the country.

3. You'll know when to expect a decision
The processing time in Spain is capped at 20 business days. Apply through a home consulate, and the timeline is essentially up to them — it could be two months, three months, or longer. Having a predictable deadline makes planning your life much easier.

4. The requirements are consistent
Spain's immigration authorities have a clear, standardized set of requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa. When you apply through a home consulate, you're dealing with Spain's requirements plus whatever additional documentation your specific consulate wants to see — and that can vary and be difficult to predict.

5. You can stay in Spain while you wait
This is arguably the best part. If you apply from within Spain, you're legally permitted to remain in the country throughout the entire application process. So instead of waiting at home, anxious and uncertain, you can be here — exploring cities, enjoying the food, soaking up the culture — and wait out the process in comfort.

If coming to Spain is an option for you, it's almost always the better path. Longer permit, simpler process, faster decision, and you get to spend that waiting period living the life you're applying for.
