Sworn Translation Frequently Asked Questions
A sworn translation (traducción jurada) is an officially certified translation completed by a translator approved by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It includes the translator's seal, signature, and certification statement so that Spanish authorities will accept it as legally valid.
You generally need a sworn translation whenever you present a foreign document to a Spanish public authority (police, immigration office, ministry, tax office, court, university, etc.) that is in a language other than Spanish. Common examples include: birth certificates, marriage certificates, bank statements, diplomas, criminal background checks, and contracts.
It depends on the document, but generally, yes. If the document you are getting translated is an official government issued document (i.e. birth certificate, FBI background check) and the issuing country participates in the Hague Apostille Convention, the document should be apostilled before being translated.
Exceptions: some immigration offices or universities may not require apostille for certain documents, but the safest rule is apostille then translate.
Some documents do not require a sworn translation. However, for most official documents, Spanish authorities will only accept a sworn translation.
If you are submitting the physical documents to the Spanish authorities, then yes. However, there are some processes where you can submit your documents online. In these cases, you only need to have a digital copy of the sworn translations. We will always send you a digital version and, if necessary, a physical copy as well.

Yes. We can mail you the physical copy of the translations. Depending on where you live and when you need the document, we select the best shipping option.
The translation itself never expires. However, the underlying document may have its own expiration (for example, an FBI background check is usually only valid 6 months). If the original expires, you will need a new document and a new translation.
